With more than 30 years in the HR arena, her experience is as broad as it is deep, covering everything from talent acquisition and management to employee relations, benefits, and payroll. I know that you are a very busy person. Before we dive in, our readers would love to \u201cget to know you\u201d a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your \u2018backstory\u2019 and how you got started?<\/strong>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b7afa8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b7afa8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI started my career in retail, and I remember having a conversation with my manager back then. I told her I was leaving for an HR role, and she told me that I wouldn\u2019t be happy pushing papers around all day. To some extent, she had a point. But thankfully, my earlier HR roles were in manufacturing, so I was able to walk the shop floors and learn about the various roles in the company. This helped me learn a lot about what people do, which, in turn, helped me become a more effective partner to the business and its leaders.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd8e9cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd8e9cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs for my HR journey, it\u2019s been quite a ride. I\u2019ve worked in benefits, payroll, recruitment \u2014 I can confidently say I\u2019ve covered all aspects of HR. Though I must say that my favorite part of HR is recruiting. There\u2019s excitement in finding the right fit for a team, and that excitement has helped me build a best-in-class HR team.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b77afde elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b77afde\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOn top of that, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of industries \u2014 manufacturing, technology, restaurant, retail, and logistics. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? We all make our share of mistakes, and I\u2019m no exception. Like everyone, I\u2019ve had my moments where I\u2019ve fallen flat on my face. But I do think the saying is true: What doesn\u2019t kill you makes you stronger. So, while I don\u2019t have a laugh-out-loud story for you, I can tell you that each time I messed up, I learned something that helped me do better next time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-676bed1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"676bed1\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34f749b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"34f749b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Is there a particular person who you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?<\/strong>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c99ac46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c99ac46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI have two people who come to mind, each for very different reasons.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc56228 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc56228\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe first is my amazing 95-year-old aunt who is still a ball of fire. She spent her entire career at Citibank in New York City, and she was my role model growing up. I was in awe of the way she dressed up for work and would take the train into the city to work in the office. She supported herself, navigated through a male-dominated world and was an example of the strong, independent woman that I wanted to be. She was also a world traveler and inspired the travel bug in me too.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c143e55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c143e55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe second person who significantly impacted my journey is a former colleague from my early management days. This executive left an indelible mark that I still think about to this day. During a customer visit, they introduced me with the comment, \u201cshe\u2019s just back office.\u201d At that moment, I felt deflated and disappointed that he said that. But this person\u2019s mistake gave me purpose. It drove me to prove that I\u2019m not just back office. HR isn\u2019t back office; it\u2019s a strategic partner at the heart of decision-making.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab193e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab193e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the male-dominated world, we\u2019ve come so far and I\u2019m so proud of the fact that all of us together, no matter the gender, have really worked hard to bring us to where we are today.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5b2eb0 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b5b2eb0\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5562315 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5562315\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Can you please give us your favorite \u201cLife Lesson Quote\u201d? It\u2019s the experiences with the latter that will really drive you to continue to work hard \u2014 harder than everyone else. Don\u2019t waste time doubting yourself because you know what the right thing to do is. Why do you think HR deserves a place in the boardroom and in high-level decision-making? Can you help articulate how a company will gain from that?<\/strong>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e16dbc9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e16dbc9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAbsolutely HR should have a seat at the table in the boardroom and play an integral part in high-level decisions. Talent planning and human capital play a big part in making business decisions and setting strategy. The board needs an HR person involved because we\u2019re well-versed in talent planning, reorganization, scaling up or down to support business needs. Plus, we need to understand the business strategy so we can appropriately coach our leaders and, while recruiting, sell opportunities to candidates.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74c4780 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"74c4780\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-929806c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"929806c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>From your experience, how can HR people and culture professionals ensure they\u2019re involved in strategic planning processes?<\/strong>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6645ee9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6645ee9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt comes down to having the support of the CEO and leadership team. It\u2019s very difficult if you don\u2019t have that support. To earn that support and be involved in the strategic planning process, we need to make sure we\u2019re adding value and sharing what\u2019s happening in the organization and the industry. HR also needs to stay on top of the competition\u2019s HR practices as well as convey what employees, managers and candidates are saying internally. My aspiration is to become a CEO! HR leaders must be well-versed in all aspects of the business to fully partner with other leaders and support, coach, manage and motivate teams to perform.
