If the mediation fails, strikes, work stoppages and supply chain disruptions could occur.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90099c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"90099c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cWe anticipate that the involvement of the NMB will cause the industry to refocus on addressing the legitimate needs of the men and women whose labor generates their positive financial returns,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/ble-t.org\/news\/rail-labors-largest-coalition-reaches-dead-end-on-path-to-voluntary-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coordinated Bargaining Coalition (CBC<\/a>), which negotiates on behalf of the 10 rail unions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32c603b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32c603b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cThe railroads believe in the collective bargaining process and will continue negotiating in good faith to reach voluntary agreements with the CBC unions,\u201d said NCCC\u2019s Brendan Branon in a National Railway Labor Conference (NRLC) <a href=\"https:\/\/raillaborfacts.org\/news\/railroads-enter-mediation-with-coordinated-bargaining-coalition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. \u201cIn that regard, the railroads welcome the NMB\u2019s assistance and look forward to their discussions with the CBC and the NMB.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdadf8f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"fdadf8f\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b26ba96 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b26ba96\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Happens Now?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-051e74d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"051e74d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCollectively, the CBC unions represent more than 105,000 railroad workers covered by the various organizations\u2019 national agreements, the NRLC reports, and make up over 80% of the workforce to be affected by this round of negotiations.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf01898 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf01898\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAccording to the NRLC, rail industry negotiations are governed by the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which is designed to minimize service disruptions because of labor disputes. In the railroad industry, collective bargaining agreements remain in force indefinitely. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8be3371 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8be3371\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cWithout a contract expiration date, negotiators do not work against a fixed deadline and proceed through various steps that are designed to facilitate negotiated settlements,\u201d the NRLC explains.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8813a68 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8813a68\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These steps include compulsory mediation under the supervision of the NMB, which is commonly used in national freight rail bargaining. Strikes and other forms of work stoppages are prohibited while this process is underway, the NRLC points out.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee7cd14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee7cd14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cWith this most recent filing by the CBC, all unions in national handling are now engaged in the mediation process,\u201d it adds. \u201cIn every case the railroads\u2019 goal is to reach fair agreements in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-039a0b4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"039a0b4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e01be25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e01be25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A \u201cNormal Course of Action\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18a7c91 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18a7c91\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Referring to mediation as a \u201cnormal part of the collective bargaining process,\u201d the NRLC says the process has been used in many recent national railroad negotiations to facilitate final agreements. There is no time limit for the mediation process, which may take months or years to complete. This happens when the parties reach a voluntary agreement or the NMB concludes that all reasonable efforts to reach such an agreement through mediation have failed.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca3538e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca3538e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cFor decades, the national bargaining process under the federal Railway Labor Act (RLA) has been remarkably successful in facilitating contract settlements without labor strikes,\u201d the group states, noting that the last service disruption due to a dispute arising from national bargaining took place in the early-1990s. \u201cThe railroads believe in the collective bargaining process and will continue negotiating in good faith to reach voluntary agreements without any disruptions to service.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da1bd58 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da1bd58\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That may change this year if the mediation doesn\u2019t work. For example, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) recently voted 96.7% in favor of strike action if necessary. The possible work stoppage affects more than 3,000 locomotive engineers, conductors, trainpersons and yard workers at Canadian Pacific Railway, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamstersrail.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TCRC reports<\/a>. The group\u00a0participated in the mediation process with the assistance of the FMCS.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0391ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0391ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As of March 16th, the final day of mediation, CP issued a 72-hour notice of its plan to lockout employees on Sunday, March 20, 2022 if the union leadership and the company are unable to come to a negotiated settlement. Within the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.ca\/en\/cp-issues-72-hour-notice-to-lock-out-tcrc-train-engine-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official CP statement<\/a>,\u00a0they state they took this \u201c undesirable step because we cannot prolong the uncertainty associated with a potential strike for weeks or months. Since Sunday, TCRC has been in a position to issue a 72-hour strike notice, introducing uncertainty into the supply chain that is already being felt. We take this action today to bring that uncertainty to an end. Delaying resolution of this situation would only make things worse.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e751e9b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e751e9b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Following CP\u2019s lockout notice, the TCRC \u2013 Train &amp; Engine provided CP with its 72-hour strike notice, effective on Sunday, March 20, 2022. \u201cFor greater clarity, CP\u2019s 72-hour lockout notice issued on March 16, 2022, as previously communicated, also to be effective 00:01 ET Sunday, March 20, 2022, remains in effect.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6950a71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6950a71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On Sunday, March 20, 2022, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/teamsters-canada-rail-conference-on-strike-at-cp-863399528.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a strike<\/a>\u00a0throughout the country.
