{"id":16870,"date":"2020-11-19T14:56:26","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T14:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.odysseylogistics.com\/?p=16870"},"modified":"2023-12-28T07:15:46","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T07:15:46","slug":"transportation-capacity","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.odysseylogistics.com\/blog\/transportation-capacity\/","title":{"rendered":"High demand for transportation capacity is impacting shippers worldwide"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"16870\" class=\"elementor elementor-16870\" data-elementor-post-type=\"blog\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fd6354 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2fd6354\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe664e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fe664e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">With more companies stocking up \u201cjust in case,\u201d the demand for global transportation, warehousing, and storage capacity is at the highest it\u2019s been all year.<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a5d3c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6a5d3c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As more companies pivot their \u201cjust in time\u201d inventory management and distribution models back to more traditional \u201cjust in case\u201d approaches, the shift is having a profound impact on transportation networks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e974c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3e974c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Left shaken by the sudden (and unexpected) global pandemic and the toll it took on global supply chains, nearly all transportation modes are facing capacity shortages and other logistics challenges that are trickling down to the individual shippers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3274274 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3274274\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cFreight forwarders say that container shortages at Asian ports are so severe that carriers with premium trans-Pacific services are sometimes unable to guarantee customers\u2019 equipment will be available at the Asian load ports they serve,\u201d Bill Mongelluzzo writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joc.com\/maritime-news\/container-lines\/asia-container-shortage-worsens-even-premium-services_20201104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>JOC<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8611e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c8611e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cThe container shortages are so acute, particularly at the Chinese ports of Xiamen, Ningbo, and Shanghai, that some vessels are leaving Asia without full loads because there is not enough equipment to be found,\u201d he continues. \u201cU.S. imports from China moving through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have been exceptionally strong since late June when the economy began to reopen from initial COVID-19 lockdowns.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9baa49 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f9baa49\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83ccc83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"83ccc83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Just in Time Vs. Just in Case<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f05ad1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0f05ad1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An inventory strategy that finds companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/j\/jic.asp#:~:text=The%20just%20in%20case%20(JIC,the%20orders%20have%20come%20in.&amp;text=The%20older%20'just%20in%20case,that%20have%20trouble%20forecasting%20demand.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keeping large inventories on hand<\/a>, just in case (JIC) helps minimize the probability that a product will be out of stock. While it can result in higher inventory holding costs, JIC gives companies a level of assurance that the goods will be on the shelves when their customers need them. It\u2019s also the polar opposite of just in time (JIT), whereby companies stock minimal quantities of product in order to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/j\/jit.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0increase efficiency and decrease waste<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ec5f254 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ec5f254\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Stung by the impacts of the global pandemic and ready to start future-proofing their supply chains, more companies are going back to JIC stocking approaches. This is impacting transportation networks, most notably those that move goods out of Asia. Already strained by the high volume of high-value cargo moving by airfreight, and PPE being transported by premium ocean freight, capacities are under pressure as we move into the holiday season.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-60508da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"60508da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The challenges don\u2019t end there. Domestically, warehouse space is at full capacity\u2014a dearth that\u2019s creating a delay in the unloading of incoming containers. With nowhere for these shipments to go once they hit land, they\u2019re just languishing in containers at port, waiting for someone to unload and distribute them. The issue also impacts intermodal, which is also seeing delays due to the high influx of incoming cargo. Additionally, all Class 1 railroads are still pushing forward with Precision Railroading efficiencies and cutting costs. This has resulted in shortages of crews and layoffs at the corporate level. Almost all have implemented mandatory furloughs, further affecting the labor pool in railyards across the country.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4087dd5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4087dd5\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-373290a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"373290a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Demand Surge & Warehousing<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64a1f82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64a1f82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While on-line retail sales are surging, warehouse inventories are turning over faster than ever.\u00a0 Those manufacturers who have historically maintained proximity inventories in warehouses around the country, are currently struggling to refill those warehouses while supporting a surge in demand for everything from paper boxes to alcoholic beverages.\u00a0 Whenever possible, most producers are looking to stage as much as they can in a warehouse as stop gap against further disruption in the supply chain due to COVID-19.\u00a0 It remains to be seen if the plan to build those inventories can mesh with capacity at the manufacturing level while they fill the surge in demand for their products.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2208d7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d2208d7\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6a4294 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b6a4294\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Navigating a Perfect Storm<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25a8788 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25a8788\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As carriers put new strategies in place to help ease some or all of the congestion and capacity constraints (e.g., reducing the number of \u201cfree days\u201d of detention offered), the moves have yet to have much impact on improving the immediate problem.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5dab7d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5dab7d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In fact, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydsloadinglist.com\/freight-directory\/news\/Supply-chains-facing-%E2%80%98a-perfect-storm-to-end-all-storms%E2%80%99\/77784.htm?cl=article_1&amp;elqTrack=true&amp;mc_cid=21d389181f&amp;mc_eid=7d14883af1#.X6QvrGhKiHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lloyd\u2019s Loading List<\/em><\/a>, Mike King says global cargo owners and supply chains, particularly in the U.S., are facing \u201ca perfect storm to end all storms,\u201d with surging demand and changing supply models meeting major air and ocean freight capacity constraints. Combined with multiple other issues including shortages of available shipping containers, drivers, delivery vehicles, and truck chassis, the situation is putting new pressure on the world\u2019s supply chains.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d5f621 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d5f621\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The problem initiated with ocean freight, but has since radiated out to all transportation modes. With shipping volume expected to be high right up to the Chinese New Year (February 12, 2021), the problem isn\u2019t expected to wane anytime soon. And with shippers loading up on inventory in anticipation of the next supply chain disruption, the problem could even worsen as we get deeper into 2021.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7229f16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7229f16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The shift to more e-commerce had pushed retailers to increase their storage and distribution capacity, with companies hiring seasonal workers earlier this year than normal. \u201cWarehousing is a peak commodity these days, especially in southern California,\u201d National Retail Federation\u2019s Jonathan Gold told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydsloadinglist.com\/freight-directory\/news\/Supply-chains-facing-%E2%80%98a-perfect-storm-to-end-all-storms%E2%80%99\/77784.htm?cl=article_1&amp;elqTrack=true&amp;mc_cid=21d389181f&amp;mc_eid=7d14883af1#.X6QvrGhKiHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lloyd\u2019s Loading List<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWarehouses are pretty much full.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a484b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2a484b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To shippers that are attempting to ride out this current \u201cperfect storm\u201d and secure their transportation capacity for 2021,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.odysseylogistics.com\/\">Odyssey<\/a>\u00a0recommends the following actions, to the extent possible, to aid with the current capacity challenges:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1695594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1695594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li>Solidify week to week projections for Transpacific Eastbound cargo leading up and including Lunar New Year, which begins February 12, 2021 this year.<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Work with customers and Odyssey planning team to supply the greatest lead time possible to ensure the team has the greatest flexibility in securing contractual coverage<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Share with Odyssey team information pertaining to campaigns to ensure Procurement and Operations teams are working in concert to secure contracted coverage where possible<\/li><br>\n \t<li>With the holiday season in full swing, Odyssey requests that clients work closely with both teams (Procurement\/Operations) to ensure alignment on existing and any new orders that may need to ship around Thanksgiving and Christmas<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Where lane density supports the arrangement and customer requirements allow, explore dedicated options in coordination with Odyssey Procurement<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Another option is a mini-bid, where carriers and shippers negotiate shorter term rates for a 90-day period. This manages a two-fold risk of balancing near-term capacity availability without locking in longer-term higher rates (should the overall, contracted freight cost decrease)<\/li><br>\n \t<li>While there is overall capacity tightening, particular impact has been observed to shipments requiring hazardous materials and tanker endorsements.
